Thirteen Ghosts (stylized as Thir13en Ghosts), a 2001 remake from Dark Castle Entertainment, didn't
exactly blow the box office away when it came out, grossing only $68 million globally on a large $42
million production budget. The movie received mostly unfavorable reviews at the time it was released,
and was believed to have been a failure.
I did not. I love it.
But, well, times have certainly changed. Thirteen Ghosts, directed by Steve Beck, has undergone a
critical evaluation in the 20 years following its initial theatrical premiere, and in 2023, it has become
somewhat of a popular favorite. Fans have grown to love the gory effects, the lavish production design, and the monsters themselves, who had their own backstories thanks to a DVD additional feature that we've previously reported about. It's also safe to assume that Dark Castle has taken notice of this resurgence in interest.
Thirteen Ghosts is the "Crown Jewel of their library," according to what we've been told, and is "a
property that is long overdue for a resurrection."
You may have even caught a report on Dread Central earlier this month that hinted at a Thirteen Ghosts TV show that is "reportedly in development" at the moment.
According to Dread Central's exclusive report, the proposed project is the brainchild of Patrick Mediate (Primordial Pictures), Aaron McLane (VFX Supervisor, Fear the Walking Dead), and Ashley Robinson (co-producer, Fear the Walking Dead). The three have been working closely with Dark Castle Entertainment on a detailed pitch that will essentially allow each of the film's ghosts to get their own episode of a TV series.
Now that the writer's strike is over, Mediate, McLane, Robinson, and Dark Castle Entertainment will
begin pitching.
But the team still has a rather big obstacle to conquer. Thirteen Ghosts is now partially owned by Sony, therefore Dark Castle is unable to really produce this proposed television series without Sony's consent. The onus will therefore fall on Sony, even though the Dark Castle crew is all-in and prepared to go.
But in fact, the proposal was presented to Sony just before the WGA strike started.
The plan on Dark Castle's end is to essentially use the 2001 movie's ending as a springboard for a deep
exploration into the mythology of each of the monsters if Sony and Dark Castle can reach some kind of agreement — either Sony joins forces with Dark Castle on the series or they simply give Dark Castle the green light to do what they wish with the property. As you may remember, towards the film's conclusion, the spirits are set free, and they proceed to wander off into the woods. Each of those
personalities would receive their own spotlight in the Mediate team's proposed television series.
Not only the ghosts, but also the Arcanum, the ancient tome that served as the movie's Necronomicon,
and the Basileus Machine, would be in the series/show.
