According to the Sept 6th, announcement by service authorities, the Army will seek an even more ambitious update to its M1 Abrams main combat tank, which could have soldiers inside by the start of 2030.

The Army and General Dynamics Land Systems have been considering future options for the present tank fleet for a number of years. The Abrams System Enhancement Package version 4 (SEPv4) was what the original plans called for, but a new general design or a more forceful upgrade were also under consideration. Finally, the SEPv4 program was terminated by service officials, who named the todayannounced development M1E3 Abrams and added enhancements to keep the fleet operational into 2040 and beyond.

The "E" designation, which the service said stands for, denotes an engineering change that is "more significant than a minor modification" and will be used to identify a prototype in relation to the new course of action. The Army stated that it intends to take the "best features" of the M1A2 SEPv4 and merge them with the most recent modular open systems architecture standards, however it did not specify how that engineering modification will be implemented. Upon completion, industry will be able to easily integrate new technology for "a more survivable, lighter tank."

A smaller 59-ton Abrams X technology demonstration was introduced by GDLS last year to provide the Army an alternate route to the one it is currently taking for the SEPv4 program. Although that demonstrator won't be the M1E3's ultimate form, it did present ideas for a new tank that the Army would probably take into account when creating the new model.

But how strong is it? Hopefully its strong enough to deal with advanced weapons and/or have a shield!

And let's not forget, a lot can happen between now and then!
